She is most well known for the portraits she does of her children, which are said to portray both childhood nostalgia and sexuality. These portraits represent how bittersweet and difficult the process of growing up can be. While Mann saw the photos as "natural through the eyes of a mother," her work became very controversial because of her children's nudity. She was even accused of child pornography and her work was censored by the Wall Street Journal. Even so, she remained a very popular artist of her time.
